AUGUSTA, Ga. - Robert Singleton "Bob" Balk, 85, passed away at his residence on April 5, 2010.

Mr. Balk was a lifelong resident of Augusta, Ga., who served his country during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the University of Georgia and began his career at NCR. Several years later, he joined his father at the First Federal Savings and Loan Institution as Assistant Vice President and subsequently retired as President of the Company before founding and serving as President and CEO of First Columbia Bank (now Georgia Bank and Trust Co.). He was also Past President of both the Augusta and Columbia County Chambers of Commerce. Mr. Balk had a strong devotion to family, church, and community. He served his church and community in many different capacities on various charity, finance, and board committees. He passionately believed that no one should be hungry in this Country and, to that end, devoted most of his spare time to the Golden Harvest Food Bank. In retirement, Mr. Balk also volunteered at the Master's Soup Kitchen. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to fish, play golf, and spend time with his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Balk is survived by his children, Becky Gorrell of Aiken, S.C. and Nancy Glass of Augusta Ga.; his grandchildren, Kristen Gorrell and Joseph and Joshua Glass; his brother and sister-law, George and Carole Balk of Augusta, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Balk of Elko, S.C. and Jane Balk Ferko of Aiken, S.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Balk was predeceased by his brothers, Theodore F. Balk, William "Bill" Balk and Thomas "Tom" Balk.

A Memorial Service will be conducted by the Reverend David Hunter on Thursday, April 15, at 4:30 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Augusta, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Golden Harvest Food Bank, 3310 Commerce Dr., Augusta, Ga.
