      Clara Jackson Martin, born in Albertville on May 10, 1911, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, in Birmingham.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, Hogan and Mozelle Harris Jackson of Albertville and by her siblings, Wilkins Warren Jackson, Mary Harris Jackson St. John and Hogan Jackson Jr., all lately of Birmingham.

      She was educated at Ward Belmont in Nashville, graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon and was married for 59 years to the late Frank Jackson Martin, a prominent Gadsden attorney. She was a charter member of the Gadsden Service Guild and belonged to the Thursday Study Club, the Great Books and the First Methodist Church of Gadsden. She was a member of First Families of Virginia and was an accomplished genealogist whose writings were published in genealogical books and periodicals.

      In 1992, she moved to Kirkwood-by-the-River and joined St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Mountain Brook.

      She is survived by her children, Clara Ann Martin (Mrs. W.T. Goodloe) Rutland of Birmingham and Frank Jackson Martin Jr., of Magnolia Springs and Charleston, W.Va.; by her seven grandchildren, Clara Rutland Mallette, Nancy Rutland Glaub and Susan Lane Rutland, of Birmingham, Mary Goodloe Rutland Tucker, of Pageland, S.C., Jessica Martin Lane of Charleston, W.Va., Woodson Jackson Martin of Menlo Park, Calif., and James Taylor Martin of New Orleans; and by her 10 great-grandchildren, Lee Goodloe Mallette, Clara Shannon Mallette, Geoffrey Warren Glaub, James Hampton Vinoski and Michael Hogan Vinoski, of Birmingham, Clara Elizabeth Tucker of Pageland, S.C., Amanda Beaumont Lane and Mary Keeton Lane of Charleston, W.Va., and Keeton Leonard Martin and John Arthur Martin of Menlo Park, Calif. She was much beloved by her extended family and will be remembered by all who knew her as a gracious hostess.

      In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorials be made to New Beacon Hospice, 2145 Highland Ave., Suite 120. 35205; Kirkwood by the River, 3605 Ratliff Rd., 35210; or to The Frank Jackson Martin Scholarship Fund, University of Alabama School of Law, University, AL 35485.

      Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Gadsden. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
