    • STRITIKUS, GEORGE ROBERT, age 62, of Birmingham, AL passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004 after a lengthy illness.

      Graveside services were held on June 16, 2004 at Elmwood Cemetery.

      He is survived by his children: son and daughter-in-law, John and Amy Stritikus of Nashville, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Bill Slavin of Huntsville, AL; and son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Keri Stritikus of Calera, AL; one brother, Jim Stritikus of Eagle Mountain, UT; and one sister, Lyn Stritikus of Dacula, GA.

      From his interest in plants as a child, George became a child horticultural protege in the Rose Society and Dahlia Society of Alabama as well as the Henry Shaw Cactus Society of St Louis, MO. He graduated from Ensley High School ('60) and then attended Auburn University on Garden Club scholarships to earn his undergraduate ('64) and graduate ('66) degrees in Ornamental Horticulture. The Master of Divinity degree was received from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY in 1970. After which he served as the Associate Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Brewton, AL.

      After serving in the FBC of Brewton, Mr. Stritikus returned to the horticulture arena and directed the installation of the landscape for Brookwood Medical Center after its opening in 1972. As a County Extension Agent of Auburn University from 1977 to 1997, Mr. Stritikus worked in Montgomery and Jefferson counties as well as a special project in the Horticulture Department at Auburn and a three-year assignment at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. He started researching gardening history in 1980 and developed an extensive collection of the historical plant materials introduced into Alabama over the centuries. He was a charter member of the Southern Gardening History Society and the American Heritage Rose Society. He was also a member of the American Boxwood, Cactus and Succulent, Rose, Daffodil and Camellia societies as well as the Montgomery Rose, African Violet and Daylily societies. In 1978 he became the youngest Flower Show Judge to be accredited and later served on the Judges Council of Alabama.
