    • Mr. Charlie J. Bland, age 91, died Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was the son of the late Charles Kelly Bland and Bertha Boyd Bland.

      Mr. Bland was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from February of 1943 until his honorable discharge in February of 1946. During his service he was a military policeman with the 78th Combat Battalion A Company. Mr. Bland was the recipient of the American Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; World War II Victory Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal.

      Mr. Bland retired from Georgia Southern University in 1985 following 20 years of service as Custodian Supervisor.

      He was a long-time member of the Statesboro Bible Baptist Church. Mr. Bland was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War and a member of the Bulloch Historical Society and the National Rifle Association (NRA).

      Mr. Bland was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Juanita "Nita" Bland and a son, Gary Lee Bland and a grandson, Cody Lee Bland.

      Surviving are a son, James Kelly Bland of Hendersonville, NC; a daugher-in-law, Rhonda Odom Bland of Statesboro; three grandchildren, Chad Breedlove of South Dakota, Trevor Bland of Macon and Tiffany DuBois of Statesboro and eight great-grandchildren.

      Funeral services will be at 2:00pm in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. Max Alderman officiating.

      Interment with military honors will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

      Pallbearers will be Madison Durden, Wayne Durden, Joe McGlamery, Terry Nessmith, Ken Boyd and Bryan Moseley.

      Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charlton Mosley, Sherwood Boyd and Dr. Haywood Boyd.

      The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.

      Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

      Visitation will be Thursday from 1:00pm until the funeral hour at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
