Long-time Springfield resident, educator and mother Thelma Fussell Matthews, 88, died on September 28, 2010. She was surrounded by members of her loving family at her daughter's home in Tyngsboro, Mass., at the time of her passing.

Thelma was born on February 2, 1922 to William Fussell and Rosa Lott Fussell on the family farm in Coffee County, Ga.

During World War II she worked as a civil service employee for the U.S. Army Air Corps in Florida where she met the man who became her husband and companion for 57 years, E. Howard Matthews of Bowling Green, Ky.

Her two eldest children were born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, while Howard Matthews was principal of the public school in nearby Auburn. Her daughter was born in Springfield, Missouri, where Howard taught at Southwest Missouri State and later served as provost.

She was an active member of University Heights Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School, participating in mission and fellowship groups, and serving as church librarian for almost thirteen years.

Thelma completed her bachelor's degree at Southwest Missouri State in 1964 and became a reference librarian at the University, while still caring for her family and frequently hosting international students in the family's home.

At the library, she was known for looking out for the interests of students, once following a member of the faculty out of the library and demanding that he return a book that had been placed on reserve for student use. Despite the fact that the faculty member subsequently became Governor of Missouri, a U.S. Senator and Attorney General of the United States, Thelma never completely forgave him for refusing to return the book.

She is survived by her sister Lucy Embleton, three children: Edward Matthews of Springfield, Missouri; Stanley Matthews of Friday Harbor, Wash.; and Susan Matthews Webber of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts; and by grandchildren Melissa Fieker, Tamra Matthews, Aubrey Webber and Angela Webber; and great-grandchildren James and Riley Fieker, and Amelia Matthews Hufnagel.

She was preceded by her husband, brothers Benjamin, Lloyd and J.W. Fussell, sisters Rhoda Moore and Annie Mae Purvis, and grandson David Matthews.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., October 16, 2010 at the Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations to local hospice organizations.
