Died:
- E. SNOW MARTIN, Sr., 98
Attorney
LAKELAND - Mr. E. Snow Martin, Sr., 98, passed away from natural causes Friday (Sept. 7, 2007).
Snow Martin was born near Ocala, Florida on August 13, 1909. He and his wife Mary were married in 1932 where they began an odyssey of life that lasted 75 years. Their journey began with Snow becoming an attorney, and moving to Polk County. Mr. Martin was elected to the legislature in 1934. Snow was intrigued by the process of making law, and they enjoyed attending the many galas in Tallahassee.
Together they would rear six children, all of whom are college graduates, and five of whom have doctorates in law. Their children attended college over a span of thirty years.
Mr. Martin was a community activist who believed that citizens owed a duty to the community to participate at all levels. He was president of many organizations: Lakeland Rotary, Lakeland Bar Assoc., Chamber of Commerce, St. David's Episcopal Church, Arabian Horse Assoc., Florida Bar Board of Governors, Board of Santa Fe High School, to name a few.
As an attorney, he was dedicated to his clients' interest regardless of their gender, race or economic status. He was a lawyer's lawyer, and was believed by many of his peers in the 1950s thru the 1980s to be one of the finest attorneys in the state of Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children Snow Martin, Jr., Sue Setliff, Cecelia Moore, Michael Martin, Stephen Martin and Tom Martin. Snow and his wife Mary have 16 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at St. David's Episcopal Church on Edgewood Ave.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. David's Episcopal Church choir fund, 145 E. Edgewood, Lakeland, FL., 33803, or to V.I.S.T.E., 1232 E. Magnolia, Lakeland, Florida, 33801.
